The Mission of the Independent Stationers organization is to embrace sustainability and the fact that it is interconnected with business success. We recognize that sustainability is not an end result, but a continual process of improvement toward the goals of reducing our impact on the natural environment, engaging with our stakeholder communities, and promoting increased business profitability. Our aim is to go beyond compliance by establishing stretch goals surrounding our office and warehouse operations, delivery fleet, supply chain, and social outreach programs.
Independent Stationers took several steps toward becoming a more sustainable business in 2011, and is looking forward to leading our membership and the entire industry into 2012 and beyond. Included in our achievements are the following:
- The appointment of Scott Zintz as our Sustainability Strategist. Scott has completed graduate studies at Presidio Graduate School in California and Green Mountain College in Vermont to achieve an MBA in Sustainable Business Practices. Scott previously served as Environmental Sales Strategist for Office Depot and is tasked with leading the Independent Stationers Green Team and newly formed Sustainability Committee.
- The creation of an internal “Green Team” to lead Independent Stationers corporate offices. To date the Green Team has implemented programs for environmental procurement of greener alternatives, double-sided printing of internal documents, waste reduction program, recycling of all possible products at our corporate office, an e-waste disposal program and sustainability training for all corporate employees.
- Creation of a training platform “Going Green Without Going into the Red” which is focused on the cost cutting nature of sustainability in business.
- Establishment of the Independent Stationers Sustainability Committee of dealers which will be a catalyst for innovating programs and practices to map out the business case for member sustainability.
